Extended: Bjarne Melgaard at Julia Stoschek Collection
Bjarne Melgaard’s ‘My Trip’ has been extended at Julia Stoschek Collection in Berlin and will close on 12 January 2020.
Acute Art and Julia Stoschek Collection are delighted to present a new VR work by Norwegian artist, Bjarne Melgaard.
About My Trip
My Trip (2019) takes the viewer on a journey to the farthest reaches of the dark web. Bjarne Melgaard compares the experience to taking Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). Drawing from the artist’s personal experience with hallucinogenic drugs, My Trip deals with anti-Natalism, suicide, psychedelia, Stig Sæterbakken, overpopulation, overpopulation, casual paranoia and more.
Melgaard’s work is influenced by elements as varied as The Sofa: A Moral Tale, a 1742 libertine novel by Claude Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon to Black Metal band, Darkthrone. ’My Trip’ references the experience of taking the naturally occurring drug, Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), produced by a gland in the brain. DMT is considered the strongest hallucinogenic component and is found in almost every living being on earth. Melgaard’s VR work replicates ‘the extremely upbeat tempo of the whole experience’.
A semi-retrospective of the artist’s career, the work features characters that have recurred in the artist’s practice for over 20 years.
AR at Julia Stoschek Collection
Acute Art and Julia Stoschek Collection will also present an augmented reality (AR) artwork by Koo Jeong A. Part of the artist’s series Prerequisites 7 (2019), this work entitled density, will be on view at the Collection and at select external locations in Berlin. density has previously been shown this year at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia and at Fondation Beyeler during Art Basel in June.
